Flight instruction: $55/hr

Instruction is $55/hr for primary training and $60/hr once you are past a Sport or Private certificate, in anything that is not a Cirrus. In a Cirrus it is $140/hr with a Cirrus Training Center instructor or $165/hr with a Cirrus Standardized Instructor Pilot, whichever aeroplane you fly and wherever you are in your training. All four figures switch to a day rate once an instructor has been with you long enough. No aeroplane rate is published: Aerowood moved every rental to a dry rate plus fuel at the pump price on July 1, 2026 and has not posted the new figures.

An estimate needs an aircraft rate.

A training total is hours multiplied by rates. With the airplanes unpriced there is nothing to multiply, and we will not fill the gap with a plausible number: every figure on this site carries a link that shows it today.

What to ask when you call

The marked ones are what Aerowood's site never answers. The rest are what turns an hourly rate into a real bill.

  1. What is the hourly rate on your cheapest trainer, and which airplane is that?Missing from their site

    This is the number that is missing from the site, and it is the largest line on your bill.

  2. Is that rate wet or dry, meaning does it include fuel?Missing from their site

    A dry rate and a wet rate are not comparable. Dry rates can run $40 to $60 an hour lower for the same airplane.

  3. What is the dry rate for each aeroplane now, and what is fuel running per hour?Missing from their site

    Rentals moved to dry rates plus fuel on July 1, 2026 and the new figures are not on the site, so the largest line in your budget is the one number missing.

  4. Which aeroplanes would I actually train in, and would any of them be a Cirrus?

    Instruction in a Cirrus costs between two and three times the non-Cirrus rate regardless of what stage you are at, so the aeroplane choice moves the instructor bill as much as the rental.

  5. After how many hours does the hourly instructor rate become a day rate?

    The agreement sets day rates for both the non-Cirrus and the Cirrus tiers and does not say what triggers the switch, which matters on an intensive schedule.

  6. Do you offer block rates or prepay discounts, and what is the refund policy if I stop partway?

    Block discounts are common and rarely published. The refund terms matter more than the discount.

  7. What do you charge for the written test, the checkride, and the examiner's fee?

    The DPE fee alone runs $800 to $1,200 in most of the country and is almost never in a quoted hourly rate.

  8. How many trainers and how many full-time instructors do you have right now?

    Availability decides your pace, and pace decides your total more than the hourly rate does.
