   This is the number that is missing from the site. Ground is often billed separately and at a different rate.

   Does the instructor rate change for the Instrument, Commercial, or CFI, or is it flat across everything?Missing from their site

   Plenty of schools charge more for advanced instruction. A flat rate quoted for the Private can climb later.

   This is the number that is missing from the site, and it is the largest line on your bill.

   Is that rate wet or dry, meaning does it include fuel?Missing from their site

   A dry rate and a wet rate are not comparable. Dry rates can run $40 to $60 an hour lower for the same airplane.

   It is one of the largest clubs in the area and the only school on this list where the numbers exist but are members-only.

   It is a club, so the airplane rate is not the whole airplane cost, and none of the dues are published.

   It appears only as an assumption in a worked example, which is not the same as a published rate.

   Do you offer block rates or prepay discounts, and what is the refund policy if I stop partway?

   Block discounts are common and rarely published. The refund terms matter more than the discount.

   What do you charge for the written test, the checkride, and the examiner's fee?

   The DPE fee alone runs $800 to $1,200 in most of the country and is almost never in a quoted hourly rate.

    How many trainers and how many full-time instructors do you have right now?

    Availability decides your pace, and pace decides your total more than the hourly rate does.

What to compare their answer against

Not West Valley's rates. The middle of what 60 California schools charge, to hold your phone quote against.

What we checked

A large two-base club at Palo Alto and San Carlos that publishes plenty about cost and no actual rates. What is on the site is a tip ("rental rates as low as $120 per hour"), a range in the FAQ ("about $120 to around $300"), a worked Cessna 152 example at $149/hr, and a cost estimator whose small print reads "Assumes $125/hr. CFI fee". None of those is a rate card: a range is not a price and an assumption in an example is not a quote, so nothing is recorded as published here.
