Cessna 172 rental
cost per hour

Flight schools print the tail numbers of the aircraft they rent. 687 Cessna 172s, on the published rate cards of 245 US schools, rent for a median of $180 an hour with fuel. The ones built since 1998 rent for $198, the older ones for $175.

Every figure here is two facts put together. A school prints a tail number beside a Cessna 172 on its own rate card with an hourly price, and the FAA's registry says which 172 it is and what year it was built. Nothing is surveyed or modelled.

Section 1

What a Cessna 172 costs per hour

Most Skyhawks rent within a narrow band. The ones outside it are older or newer than the rest, and the next two sections show which.

Figure 1Wet hourly rate, 687 Cessna 172sOne column per $20. The band shows the middle half, the tick marks the median.

Wet rates only. 50 Skyhawks at schools that bill fuel on top are listed in section 5 and left out of every median here rather than adjusted. 19 Cutlass RG and Hawk XP airframes are held out too: retractable gear and a bigger engine are a different rental.

Half of these aircraft rent for between $165 and $196 an hour. The lowest rate on any card is $87 and the highest is $300. Most of that gap is the aircraft itself. A 172S built since 1998 costs more than a 172N from the 1970s, and the registry says which one each tail is.

Section 2

The variant is the price: 172N, 172S and the G1000

Cessna built the 172 in many versions. The FAA registry records which one each tail number is, and the version changes the rate more than the state does.

Variants with at least 20 priced aircraft get a row. Built years are the earliest and latest on these rate cards, per the registry, not Cessna's production dates.

Cessna stopped building piston singles in 1986 and did not start again until 1996. Every 172 built since then is a 172R or a 172S, and those rent for $23 an hour more than the 172M, 172N and 172P built before the line closed. Where the school says the aircraft has a G1000 glass cockpit, the median is $215 across 26 aircraft.

Section 3

Cessna 172 rental rates by state

Every state with at least 5 priced Skyhawks gets a row. 13 states have fewer, and their aircraft are in the national figures but not shown alone.

52 percent of every priced Skyhawk on a rate card was built in the 1970s, and the median is 1978. A 1970s airframe is not a worse one. Training aircraft are inspected every hundred hours and their engines are overhauled on a schedule. What the year tells you is the avionics and the price. The fleet age report covers why American production stopped for a decade and what that did to every type.

A school that lists a 172 without a tail number is not here, because the registry cannot say which 172 it is. Schools marked dry bill fuel on top of the figure shown.

Section 6

Method and sources

The population. Every aircraft on a published rate card in the PilotBound directory, rated schools and partial listings alike, whose tail number the FAA Releasable Aircraft Database records as a Cessna 172 of any variant with a year of manufacture. The same aircraft the fleet age report counts.

The rate. The school's own published hourly figure for that aircraft, with fuel. Schools that bill fuel separately are listed in section 5 with the word dry and left out of every median. An hour that bundles the instructor is never a rental rate and is never recorded as one.

The dates. Each school's figure carries the day its page was read, shown on that school's page. The FAA record was read October 12, 2026. This page's date is the later of the two.
